Funny can be educational

As I’m sitting here trying to complete this assignment, I’m half watching Jay Leno. I don’t usually watch it, however, tonight I have learned a few things, such as:

  1. Islamic cleric bans women from touching bananas and cucumbers. Hopefully this is a hoax!
  2. There’s a new book out about ugly Christmas sweaters.Admit it, you’re curious.
  3. You can buy really useless things on eBay. I guess I already knew that…

I guess this is one way to keep on top of current affairs while relaxing in front of the TV.

Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!

Who doesn’t know about Saturday Night Live? As of this year, this show will have produced over 700 episodes and been on the air for 37 seasons.

Amazing comedians, such as Dan Akroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin and Gilda Radner, only to name a few, were part of the original cast. Since then, so many great comedians have taken part in this outstanding comedy show.

In addition to the stand up comedy and skits, SNL also has a live musical performance.  Sometimes, things don’t go as planned. In 1992, Sinéad O’Connor created a stir when she ripped a picture of the Pope at the end of her musical number. She was not the first person to land the show in hot water and probably won’t be the last.

Although difficult to pick only one, I really enjoyed their parody of Adele’s Someone Like You. Take a look.

“Weird Al” Yankovic: entertaining or annoying?

I recently heard that “Weird Al” Yankovic received two Grammy nominations. The first one for Alpocalypse, in the Best Comedy Album category, and the other one in the Best Short Form Music Video category for his parody of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, titled Perform This Way.

Al has been doing his thing since the late 1970’s. Better known for his song parodies, he also has recorded some original music. He never “attacks” the artist who originally made the song popular or the lyrics; instead, he keeps the music and writes highly entertaining lyrics to it. He targets popular culture and nothing is safe: music, television, food, even the news…

Over the years, “Weird Al” has sold millions of albums, received 14 Grammy nominations (won three of them), has toured all over the world, made movies, wrote a children’s book and made a whole lot of money.

In February 2011, Al published his first children’s book. When I Grow Up climbed to the number four position on The New York Times Best Seller list for Children’s Picture Books for the week of February 20, 2011.

Although not everyone can appreciate his type of humour, “Weird Al” has been around longer than many of the so-called serious artists, which proves that comedy always has a place in our lives.
